Mini Sleep Workshop

Ayurveda, Sleep, and Kapha Time

In the traditional Ayurvedic daily clock, approximately 6:00–10:00 p.m. is Kapha time. Kapha carries the qualities of heaviness, softness, slowing, stability, nourishment, and cohesion. These qualities naturally complement the transition toward sleep.

The principle is simple: Work with the evening's natural downward shift rather than moving against it.

Many people notice an evening period when the body begins feeling heavier, the eyes become softer, conversation feels less necessary, or the desire for activity decreases. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is a useful time to cooperate with Kapha's qualities and begin moving toward rest.

Why Ayurveda traditionally favors sleep before 10 p.m.

Around 10:00 p.m.–2:00 a.m., the Ayurvedic clock transitions into Pitta time. Pitta brings qualities associated with heat, focus, metabolism, processing, and activity. Traditionally, Ayurveda teaches that when we are already sleeping during this period, those qualities can be directed toward the body's nighttime processes of digestion, restoration, and integration.

When we remain awake well into Pitta time, some people experience renewed alertness, the familiar “second wind.”

Kapha opens the doorway toward sleep. Pitta can give us another wave of activity when we move beyond that doorway. That makes Early to Bed feel much more intuitive.

Tune more into the qualities of Kapha time, not time itself. Qualities like:

  • the body becoming heavier

  • a natural desire to sit or recline

  • quieter thoughts

  • softer eyes

  • less interest in outward activity

  • warmth and comfort becoming appealing

  • a desire for fewer decisions

  • an invitation toward inward attention

The next 2 slide images share about traveling.

Some of the information are ideas to try, focus on one and experiment with that one for a few nights to a full week to determine if it is working or not.
